this leap day has been a delight!
i reflected on the fact that for the past 2 leap days, i was either holding a 2 week old baby boy or waiting 2 more weeks for one to hold! now they are 4 and almost 8 and i am ready to celebrate in a new more-coherent-person way than the last few (tho they were equally endearing--those newborn moments are SO fleeting). so i've never really thought much about leap day, really, ever. until today.
so to celebrate leaps and bounds of life and love and the crazy wild ride of the messy beautiful mesh of mamahood/childhood, we decided to fill our day with a few rare things. we...
• had ice cream for breakfast (an appetizer) --followed by chicken salad.
• read the 29th chapter of proverbs
• danced to van halen's JUMP
• played our piano tunes with left hand doing right hand's part, and vice versa--really stretches the brain!
• enjoyed a lovely leap day scavenger hunt, with reading, writing, arithmetic and geography involved
• had the privilege of watching something (ed-a-ca-tional, as middle one often says) on TV which is definitely a rare thing to do on a school morning
• did leap year mad libs (as well as discussing why we have a leap year/day)
• incorporated 29 chocolate chips into our snack for the morning
• calculated our ages at the next leap year and contemplated possible ramifications of having two kids in the teen/tween age bracket, with our baby being 8! whew--seems a long way off but i know it's not
• played leap frog across the living room...the logistics being a bit cumbersome for the 4-year-old
• got out the playdough!
• got papa murphy's pizza for LUNCH!
• wrote out a few blessings on the bathroom mirror with shaving cream...hmmm....
• actually remembered to write down a kid quote to cherish "the weather is 13 feet tall, and the trees are almost breathing" ...deep thought for the day...
• ate popcorn on the bed, pretending to be guests in our own guest room, while we watched the Monkees reinact a fairy tale
• snuggled up with sleeping bags to bunk down for the night for a family sleepover, also in the guest room
• really enjoyed that "just for today" feeling all day long
• completed this blog post
along with a host of other not so rare events such as
-
-enjoying the hug-around-the-neck from my sleepy boy
-loading the dishwasher
-numerous dust bunny sightings
-wondering if the maid we hired would finally show up (maybe she thought we said there would be a mess to clean up every 4 years instead of every 4 days...hours...minutes)
-reflecting on the indescribable gift to us of these three priceless treasures who are like no one else who has ever been on this earth or will ever be here.
-attempting to thank our loving, living God for these many extraordinary glimpses of joy, hope, and love that goes beyond all bounds...
